Trail Conditions Report

Note: As a point of reference, the groomer barn is considered the mid-point of our trail system for north/south trail report descriptions. The groomer barn is located on Sly Hill, as shown on our online trail map.

Please review "Trail Info and Map" on the side menu for information regarding trail changes. Please remember that trail conditions can rapidly change from the time a trail report has been posted, and that you ride at your own risk.

Trail Reports can be found below our Trail Map. A superior quality pdf image of our map can be downloaded by clicking on the link below.

Trailbusters Trail Map

March 13, 2010 - ALL TRAILBUSTER SNOWMOBILE TRAILS ARE OFFICIALLY CLOSED FOR THE SEASON.

The Trailbusters wish to extend a thank you to all of the very gracious landowners who allowed the use of their land during this very successful snowmobiling season.

As we state every year, motorized vehicles of any type, including ATV’s and dirt bikes, are not permitted to use the trail system during the offseason. The only exception will be for club volunteers who will be closing gates and fences and removing signs.

If anyone would like to help take signs, fences and guide stakes down, please give Mark Destito a call at 336-1727. If Mark doesn't answer, please leave your name and when you are available to help on his answering machine and he will get back with you. This task can be a good time as you get to see our trails without snow while riding on our Polaris Ranger.

I hope everyone has found the daily grooming report helpful in planning their rides this season. We intend to continue this service next season. Thank you to the groomer drivers who reported daily to our groomer coordinator John Beggs, and to John for his daily phone call and update.

March 7, 2010 - OUT OF RESPECT TO OUR LANDOWNERS, ALL TRAILS SOUTH OF WHALEY ROAD (at OD 10C - the Penn Mountain Connection) ARE OFFICIALLY CLOSED. This is to include all trails on Sly Hill, to Western, North Rome and Lee Center. Additionally, all grooming has been suspended. We will reopen the trails if we have a snowfall of adequate depth. Thank you for your cooperation.

Last night, John Beggs groomed from West Branch back to to Beartown Road. From there he continued south to the groomer barn with the drag up riding on snirt. North of West Branch, the trails remained in good condition and were not groomed. Unfortunately, this may be the end of grooming on the Trailbusters trail system for the season. There remains adequate snow levels north of West Branch, but it is thinning fast. With the warmer temperatures and sun forecast for the upcoming week, it may end quickly.  The 15 day forecast does not look good for extending the season.

March 6, 2010 -  Doug Finster groomed from West Branch to West Leyden (C7 & C4A), over to Point Rock (C4I) and back to West Branch. Conditions are reported as good to excellent north of West Branch. We will be grooming the same trails tonight. All trails located south of the groomer barn are closed until we receive additional snow of adequate depth.

March 5, 2010 -  Mark Destito groomed from West Branch to West Leyden (C7 & C4A) and back to West Branch. Conditions on top of the hill are excellent with good snow cover. The Point Rock trail is very good. South of West Branch is a different story. From the top of Stokes Hill (Beartown Road) heading south is very thin and will likely be closed soon. Only local access to get to the top of the hill is recommended at this point. You can still pick your way around the bare spots, but with the rising temperatures and sunlight, this option will not last for long.

March 3, 2010 -  Dave Piersall groomed from West Branch to West Leyden (C7 & C4A), over to Point Rock (C4I) and back to West Branch. The frame on #6 was welded yesterday and the guys are putting the tracks back on today.

March 2, 2010 - This morning Dave Piersall groomed from the groomer barn to West Branch (Converse Road). Due to rapidly melting snowcover, the south end of the system will not be groomed until we receive more snow. The coolant leak in #6 has been fixed, but while it was being repaired a crack in the frame was found.

February 28, 2010 - Tim Hyde groomed the entire north half of the system last night from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 & C4A) and over to Point Rock (C4I) and back. Temperatures were again not the best for grooming. Unfortunately, we were not able to groom south due to a major coolant leak in #6 groomer.

February 27, 2010 - Last night Neil Sestito groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 & C4A) and back. John Beggs and Vera Beggs/Lance Blood (split run) groomed south (C7 & C7D) to Lee Center (C4H), down to the Beeches (S73B) and Chestnut Street (S72B) and back. The warm temperatures overnight were not good for grooming. Don't expect the trails to hold. Early bird gets the worm. Groomers will be out grooming both south and north tonight.

February 26, 2010 - Over a foot of new snow! Last night Pete Schipano groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 & C4A) and back. Please be careful. There are lots of trees and branches down. If you go riding today and encounter branches on the trail, please help the groomers out by removing them. Thank you. Groomers will be out grooming both south and north tonight.

February 23, 2010 - Walt Buehler groomed the entire north half of the system last night from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 & C4A) and over to Point Rock (C4I)  and back. Heavy snow is in the forecast for the next couple of days. Accuweather has over 20" forecast, followed by temps approaching the 40's next week.  http://www.accuweather.com/us/ny/rome/13440/forecast-15day

February 21, 2010 - Last Night, Doug Finster groomed from West Branch (Converse Road) to West Leyden (C7 & C4A), over to Point Rock (C4I) and back to West Branch. This morning, Dave Piersall will be grooming from West Branch down to the groomer barn. The Trail Party is today at the groomer barn for members and landowners. Noon to 3 pm.

February 20, 2010 - Last Night, Mark Destito groomed from West Branch (Converse Road) to West Leyden (C7 & C4A), over to Point Rock (C4I) and back to West Branch. Trail party tomorrow at the groomer barn for members and landowners. Noon to 3 pm.

February 19, 2010 - Last Night, Neil Sestito and Dave Piersall groomed from West Branch (Converse Road) to West Leyden (C7 & C4A) and back.

February 18, 2010 - John Beggs and Lance Blood groomed from West Branch south to the groomer barn, then north to West Leyden and back down to West Branch (C7 & C4A).

February 17, 2010 - Pete Schipano groomed the entire north half of the system last night from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 & C4A) and over to Point Rock (C4I) .

For those of you who haven't heard, the Governor is trying to take 20% from the trail fund or $1 million and transfer it to the general fund. We need to send letters to his office, as well as to all the other legislators that this money is not theirs to waste. For more information on this RAID, please visit the link at the New York State Snowmobile Association shown below.

February 16, 2010 - Neil Sestito and Mark Rabe groomed from West Branch (Converse Road) south to Beartown Road, then back north to West Leyden (C7 & C4A) and back to West Branch. Some icy patches, but overall good. Still not enough snow to groom south of Beartown.

February 15, 2010 - Last Night, Dave Piersall groomed from West Branch (Converse Road) to West Leyden (C7 & C4A), over to Point Rock (C4I) and back to West Branch.

February 14, 2010 - Pete Schipano and friend groomed from West Branch down to Whaley Road (C4A to OD10C) then back up to West Leyden and back down to West Branch (C7 & C4A). Heavy traffic reported yesterday on the north end of the system.

February 13, 2010 - Last night, Neil Sestito and friend groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 & C4A), over to the woods towards Point Rock (C4I) and back to West Branch.

February 12, 2010 - Yesterday afternoon, Darwin and Millie Piersall groomed from West Branch to the groomer barn.  No grooming was completed last night as maintenance was done on #7.

February 11, 2010 -  Last Night John Beggs and Darwin Piersall groomed from West Branch (Converse Road) to West Leyden (C7 & C4A), over to Point Rock (C4I) and back to West Branch. Conditions are reported as pretty good where groomed. South of West Branch is thin.

February 6, 2010 - Pete Schipano groomed from West Branch to West Leyden and back (C7 & C4A).

February 5, 2010 - Last Night John Beggs and Neil Sestito groomed from West Branch (Converse Road) to West Leyden (C7 & C4A), over to Point Rock (C4I) and back to West Branch. South trails are open with thin cover, but not enough to groom. We will be grooming the north end tonight and tomorrow night.

February 3, 2010 - Dave Piersall groomed from West Branch down to Beartown Road and back (C7). He also fixed the washed out culvert between the Beartown Road crossing and sent the following photos. Thanks Dave.

February 2, 2010 - Last Night Dave Piersall and Neil Sestito groomed from West Branch (Converse Road) to West Leyden (C7 & C4A), over to Point Rock (C4I) and back to West Branch. South trails remain closed. Still not enough snow to ride. UPDATE:  All Trailbuster trails are now open. Due to the low levels of snow on the south end, no grooming will be completed. We will continue to groom from West Branch and north.

January 29, 2010 - Not enough snow fell to be riding the south end of the system, therefore it remains closed south of West Branch. Dave Piersall went for a ride this morning and this is his report.

Good Morning,  -9 F  braved the cold to check the trail. A couple inches tops in areas, most fields are wind blown down to ice. The woods have a couple inches tops and less south of West Branch. Culvert near Beartown got washed out but you can go around it, still no snow there to help it out. North of East Ava Road and Point Rock trail, in the woods, are good for snow. Southern Tug groomed but they have at least 3 inches. Boonville south trail was not groomed but snow covered. If we get any snow we will groom, pray for snow. Looks like Sunday evening at best.

Thanks Dave for braving the cold and giving us the report!

January 26, 2010 - This is not going well at all. South of West Branch remains closed. North of West Branch are spring conditions at best. Watch for waterholes and deteriorating snow bridges.  It would probably be best to stay home and do some maintenance on the sleds.

Two rednecks are out hunting, and as they are walking along they come upon a huge hole in the ground. They approach it and are amazed by the size of it. The first hunter says "Wow, that's some hole; I can't even see the bottom. I wonder how deep it is." The second hunter says" I don't know, let's throw something down and listen and see how long it takes to hit bottom."

The first hunter says "There's this old automobile transmission here, give me a hand and we'll throw it in the hole".  So they pick it up and carry it over, and count one, and two and three, and throw it in the hole.  They are standing there listening and looking over the edge and they here a rustling in the brush behind them. As they turn around they see a goat come crashing through the brush, run up to the hole with no hesitation and jumped in head first.

While they are standing there looking at each other, looking in the hole and trying to figure out what that was all about, an old farmer walks up. "Say there", says the farmer, "you fellers didn't happen to see my goat around here anywhere, did you?"    The first hunter says " Funny you should ask, but we were just standing here a minute ago and a goat came running out of the bushes doin' about a hunert miles an hour and jumped headfirst into this hole here!"

The old farmer said "Why that's impossible, I had him chained to a transmission.

January 25, 2010 - All Trailbuster trails located south of West Branch are closed due to lack of snow. Please respect our landowners by not riding on these trails. Thank you.

January 22, 2010 - Last Night Dave Piersall groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 & C4A), over to Point Rock (C4I) and back to West Branch. The upper end still has good snow and this weather still stinks!

January 18, 2010 - All grooming operations have been suspended until we get some more snow. This weather stinks.

January 16, 2010 - Pete Schipano groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden and back (C7 & C4A).

January 14, 2010 - Neil Sestito and Jim Vaccaro groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden and back (C7 & C4A).

January 12, 2010 - The north end of the system was groomed last night to West Leyden (C7 & C4A) and Point Rock (C41) by Walt Buehler and Darin Martin. We can no longer groom the south end until we get more snow. The snow cover is thin and to continue grooming would result in damaging the equipment. There is a club meeting tonight at Lee Town Hall at 7:30 pm. Please try to attend.

January 10, 2010 - Larry Casalenuovo groomed north to West Leyden and back (C7 & C4A) and Mark Destito groomed south to Lee Center (C4H) and down to the towpath (C7D to OD114) and back. Cold. Minus 11 at Hawkins Corners last night. Groomers will be parked tonight.

January 9, 2010 - Last night, Neil Sestito and Darwin Piersall / Dave Piersall (split run) groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 & C4A) and to Point Rock (C41) and back. Doug Finster and his daughter groomed south (C7 & C7D) to Lee Center (C4H) and down to the Beeches (S73B) and back.

Club Secretary Millie Piersall has issued the Winter 2010 newsletter. The newsletter can be found by clicking on the link below. Thanks Millie!

January 8, 2010 - #6 is repaired and running well. The left rear drive sprocket failed and required replacement at a total cost of $1,300. The sprocket alone cost $1,070. A big thank you is extended to John Beggs, Darwin Piersall, David Piersall, Pete Schipano, Eve Aldridge, Lance Blood and Pete for their help in the repair which was completed on the trail. After the repairs were completed, John Beggs and Lance Blood groomed from Townline Road to Camroden Road (C7D) and then back to the groomer barn (C7D & C7). Conditions are pretty good, but we need more snow on the south end. Tonight, both groomers will be out grooming the main corridor in both the south and north direction.

January 7, 2010 - Neil Sestito and Pete Schipano groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 & C4A) and to Point Rock (C41) and back last night. The parts for #6 should be in today and repaired hopefully by tomorrow.

January 6, 2010 - Not good. Both groomers are down and it looks like it could be the end of the week before we are able to groom again. John Beggs and his crew know what the problems are and how to fix them, but it will take time and manpower to get it done. UPDATE: We had a miscommunication on the running condition of #7 (the new to us groomer). Neil Sestito will be taking it north tonight to West Leyden and Point Rock. Parts have been ordered for #6 and is being fixed on the trail.

January 5, 2010 - Last night John Beggs groomed from the barn to the Delta Lake State Park (C7P) and Camroden Road (C7D). On the way back, the steering went to hell in #6 (old groomer). The groomer is parked on the trail just past Eggan Excavating on Townline Road. Please use caution in that area.

January 4, 2010 - The south end of the system now has enough snow to groom. Last night, John Beggs and Lance Blood groomed from the groomer barn to Lee Center (C4H), then down to the Beeches (C7D & S73B) and Chestnut Street (S72B) and back (C7D). John said there was pretty good snow cover, but thin in the typical low snow corners. Yesterday, Neil Sestito and Dave Piersall groomed from West Branch to Point Rock (C41) and back to the groomer barn (C7D). Neil reported thin snow in the woods. Tonight, the south end will be groomed to the Delta Lake State Park (C7P) and Camroden Road (C7D) and back to the barn. Overall, conditions are pretty good with some thin cover in areas.

January 3, 2010 - Mark Destito groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden last night (C7 & C4A). Today, the Point Rock trail (C41) will be groomed. Still not enough snow on the south end to groom.

January 1, 2010 - Happy New Year. Dave Piersall groomed the Point Rock trail yesterday (C41). Lets hope it keeps snowing. We are getting closer to having enough snow to groom south.

December 31, 2009 - Dave and Neil groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden last night (C7 & C4A). However, they were not able to groom over to Point Rock as they spent a lot of time staking/brushing the trail along the way. The new to us groomer ran well. The south end of the system has minimal snow cover and cannot be groomed.

December 30, 2009 - Consensus is there is just enough snow on the north end of the system to commence grooming. Tonight Dave Piersall and Neil Sestito will take out our new to us groomer for the initial run of the season. Check back tomorrow to see what was groomed and how things went. The south end of the system is open, but snow cover is minimal and conditions are fair at best. Bottom line - we need more snow.

December 29, 2009 - Some well needed snow fell yesterday and last night. Trails are open, but there is still not enough to groom. Please stay on the trail on C7D near Dopp Hill Road. There is a freshly planted alfalfa filed that we must stay off of. Ride safe!

December 9th, 2009 - The first real snowfall of the season with 5"-6" of wet snow.  Trails remain closed due to inadequate snowcover. Please respect the landowners by waiting until we have more snow for that first ride. Thank you.

Please Note:  Please be aware of trail changes and stay on the trails.  We are so grateful to our landowners who give us permission to have a trail on their land so please RESPECT them.  You are also reminded to yield the right of way to a groomer.  When meeting a groomer in tight places, move off the trail as far as possible and stay there until the groomer and drag passes by you to avoid sliding down into the equipment.  The groomer cannot move off the trail nor back up. When following a groomer, stay back 100 feet until you can safely pass or are given the signal by the operator to pass.   Always dim your headlights when meeting or following a groomer as the high beams blind the driver.
