Trail Conditions Report

Note: As a point of reference, the groomer barn is considered the mid-point of our trail system for north/south trail report descriptions. The groomer barn is located on Sly Hill, as shown on our online trail map.

Please review "Trail Info and Map" on the side menu for information regarding trail changes. Please remember that trail conditions can rapidly change from the time a trail report has been posted, and that you ride at your own risk.

ATV's, dirtbikes or any wheeled vehicles are NOT allowed on the trail system. Please respect our landowners!

April 1st.
The Trailbusters trails are now officially closed for the season.

The club would like to thank all of its very generous landowners for allowing us the use of their property for our trail system. We hope everyone enjoyed the increased grooming this year and we look forward to providing safe and well maintained trails for our club members and friends next year.

Wednesday, March 19th. Trails south of Beartown Road are now closed.  Due to the lack of snow and out of respect of our generous landowners, all trail located south of Beartown Road are now closed. Trails located north of Beartown Road remain open and ridable and are in fairly good condition in the fields and rough in the woods. Be aware of hazards and open water. Unfortunately, all grooming operations have been suspended. Not only is there minimal to no snow between the groomer barn and Beartown Road, the cost of fuel has increased $0.96 per gallon since January 28th and it would be a waste of precious club funds to groom what is left of the quickly deteriorating snowcover. It has been a fantastic year and we look forward to providing our club members with great trails next season!

Saturday, March 15th.
It looks like yesterdays warm weather cooked the south trails. Sly Hill is pretty much bare to ice base and the road crossings have extended areas of dirt. The trails north of Beartown Road have softened up, but remain good. If it is cold enough tonight, the groomer will likely head out.

Thursday, March 12th.
Last night the  north trail was groomed to West Leyden (C7 and C4A) as well as over to Point Rock (C41) and back to the groomer barn. The south trails have coverage with some bare spots and are in fair condition.

Update 2:45pm. I don't know who did the grooming last night, but the quality of the job was outstanding. Perfectly flat trails. I rode from Hawkins Corners over to Lee Center, which doesn't have enough snow to be groomed but was pretty good with thin to adequate coverage. From there, I took the Trailblazers trail to Point Rock (nice) and then on our trails to West Leyden (wow). On the way back, from the junction in West Branch, I rode into Westernville (thin) and around Lake Delta back to Hawkins Corners. The south trails from Camroden Road to Hawkins Corners are ridable, but thin and rough in the woods. The closer you get to Rome, the thinner it gets. Be aware of trail hazards, some bare spots and a large waterhole near the State Park junction. I wouldn't go out of my way to ride the south half, but if you need to gain access to the north half of the system, it can be done, at least for today.  The difference between the north half and south half is like night and day. Plenty of snow from Beartown Road, north.

Tuesday, March 11th.
Yep, the Trailbusters are still grooming! Last night the  north trail was groomed from West Branch  to West Leyden (C7 and C4A) as well as over to Point Rock (C41) and back to the groomer barn. The south trails have coverage and are in fair condition. Get out and ride!

Friday, March 7th.
Last night the north trail was groomed from West Branch  to West Leyden (C7 and C4A) and back, as well as over to Point Rock (C41) and back. Watch out for open waterholes as the creeks are moving and the snow bridges are beginning to wear. Lots of water on Sly Hill, especially at the bottom at Stokes Westernville Road. Plenty of snow from Beartown Road north. Riding was excellent yesterday and should be today. South trails are in poor shape. Need more snow.

Thursday, March 6th.
Last night the north trail was groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 and C4A) and back to West Branch. Our Groomer Coordinator John Beggs reported that the trail didn't come out as well as he would have liked as the temperature wasn't cold enough and snow was not processing thru the drag.  Also, the trail was so hard in places that  the groomer did not have enough power to cut in.  The Point Rock trail (C41) was not groomed due to concerns about waterholes. The south half of the system looks icy with minimal snow cover. If it is cold enough tonight, the groomer may head north again.

Sunday, March 2nd. Last night the north trail was groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 and C4A), as well as over to Point Rock (C41) and back. The south trail was groomed from the groomer barn to Lee Center and the Beeches and back (C4H, C7D and S73B).

Saturday, March 1st.
Last night the north trail was groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 and C4A), as well as over to Point Rock (C41) and back. The south trail was groomed from the groomer barn to Lee Center and the Beeches and back (C4H, C7D and S73B). Nothing better than the new snow overnight to extend the season!

Friday, February 29th. Last night the the north trail was groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 and C4A) and back.

Thursday, February 28th. Last night the north trail was groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 and C4A), as well as over to Point Rock (C41) and back.  We are down one groomer and will do our best to keep the trails groomed while we complete the repairs.

Update: The groomer is fixed and will be out on the trail! Plenty of snowcover on the whole system. Enjoy.

Update #2: The entire south half of the trail system was groomed today (C7D, C4H, S73B, C7P and S72B). Tonight the groomer will be headed to West Leyden and back.

Tuesday, February 26th.
Last night the trail to Point Rock (C41) and back was groomed. General maintenance on the groomers and an electrical repair are on tomorrows daytime agenda, followed by some grooming in the evening. In the meantime, let it snow!

Monday, February 25th. Last night the north trail was groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 and C4A) and back. Tonight we plan on grooming to Point Rock (C41) and back. Today, maintenance on both groomers was being completed. We had some electrical problems on Saturday nights West Leyden run which were temporarily repaired. Snow is very thin as you get closer to Rome.

Sunday, February 24th. Last night the north trail was groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 and C4A), as well as over to Point Rock (C41) and back.

Saturday, February 23rd. Last night the north trail was groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 and C4A), as well as over to Point Rock (C41) and back. The south trail was groomed from the groomer barn over to Lee Center (C4H) and back only. Not enough snow to head further into Rome.

Thursday, February 21st. Last night the north trail was groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 and C4A), as well as over to Point Rock (C41) and back. Please see comments below on icy trail conditions as they remain generally the same.  Sorry, but the south trails will not be groomed again until we have more snow.

Wednesday, February 20th. Last night the north trail was groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 and C4A), as well as over to Point Rock (C41) and back. PLEASE USE CAUTION ON THE TRAILS AND SLOW DOWN! Trails are very icy, especially from the groomer barn to Beartown Road, as well as on the entire south half of the trail system. Be extra careful on hills and curves. North of Beartown Road conditions improve as the snowcover is deeper. Groomer Driver Neil Sestito said the trail is so hard it was difficult to cut through with both the blade and drag. The club plans on grooming the north trail again tonight, Friday and Saturday. Sorry, but the south trails will not be groomed again until we have more snow.

Sunday, February 17th.  Last night the north trail was groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 and C4A), as well as over to Point Rock (C41) and back. The south trail was groomed from the groomer barn to Lee Center and the Beeches and back (C4H, C7D and S73B).The guys are putting in an extraordinary effort this season in maintaining the trails and it is nice to see them receive some recognition for their efforts. This e-mail was received last night:

Definitely got the worm today!  Holy cow the trails were smooth.   Once again I am amazed at the shape your club trails are in!!   We did the loop around the Colonial this morning. Give a big THANK YOU to your groomer operators!!!!    Thanks. Sue

Saturday, February 18th. Last night the north trail was groomed from the groomer barn to West Leyden and back (C7 and C4A). The south trail was groomed from the groomer barn to Lee Center and the Beeches and back (C4H, C7D and S73B). Tonight the same trails will be groomed, as well as the trail over to Point Rock (C41). See comments above and below about staying on the trail and heavy traffic expected today from the West Rome Poker Run.

Friday, February 15th. Yesterday, the south trail (C7D) was groomed to Lee Center (C4H), the Beeches (S73B) and Camroden (C7D to Penn Mtn connection) and back. Tonight the north trails will be groomed. We are down one groomer due to a mechanical problem. Expect lots of traffic this weekend, especially Saturday. The West Rome Riders are holding their "Charity Ride" (a politically correct term for poker run) on the south half of our trail system (4 stops), the Taberg Trailblazers trail system (3 stops) and the West Rome trail system (1 stop). Sorry, but don't expect to ride flat trails with all the expected traffic on the south half of the Trailbusters trail system Saturday. You have been warned!! We will have it cleaned up and ready to ride as soon as possible afterward.

Update: 7:40pm. The groomer is fixed and both the south and north trails will be groomed tonight. Early bird gets the worm.

Thursday, February 14th. The entire north half of the trail system was groomed last night. The south half was scheduled, but a problem with the groomer kept it from happening. If the groomer is fixed this morning, then the south half will be groomed today. Don't forget those raffle tickets!

Tuesday, February 12th. The entire trail system was groomed last night. Plenty of snow everywhere, but with some ice underneath. Please be careful. Don't forget, the drawing for the raffle is this weekend. Please send your tickets in ASAP! Meeting tonight at Lee Town Hall - 7:30pm. Everyone is welcome.

Sunday, February 10th. The trail was groomed from West Branch to Point Rock (C41) and back.

Saturday, February 9th. The groomer went south last night from West Branch  to Whaley Road (OD10C), then turned around and groomed to West Leyden (C7 & C4A) and back to West Branch. Tonight or early tomorrow, the trail to Point Rock (C41) will be groomed. South of Whaley Road (OD10C), the snow cover is very thin and no grooming can be completed until we receive some significant snowfall.

Sunday, February 3rd. The groomer went north last night to West Leyden (C7 & C4A) and back to West Branch. This morning it will groom to Point Rock (C41) and back to West Branch. We will be leaving the groomer at West Branch to groom the north end of the system where there is much more snow than down by the groomer barn. Don't forget today is the Trail Party from 12-3.

Tuesday, January 29th. Last night the groomer headed north and turned around due to the lack of snow on the trails. Therefore, all grooming operations have been suspended until we receive a substantial snowfall.

Monday, January 28th. The south trails are relatively flat, but the snow cover is so thin that we cannot send the groomers out south until we have more snow. Lots of rocks on the trails and with the warm-up expected this week, we may end up starting all over again, again. The north trails took a beating from the incredible levels of traffic this past weekend. Tonight, the club plans on sending both groomers north to try to get everything back into good shape. John Beggs has done an outstanding job coordinating our grooming fleet this past week and providing us with some of the most consistently flat trails in years - even with high levels of traffic. A big thank you goes out to the groomer drivers who are making it happen. Please help our groomer drivers stay out on the trail by purchasing raffle tickets to help defray the fuel cost!

Sunday, January 27th. The majority of the trail system was groomed last night, after a day of heavy traffic. Early bird gets the worm.

Saturday, January 26. Last night the north trail (C7 & C4A) was groomed to West Leyden and Point Rock (C41) and back to the groomer barn. The south trail (C7D) was groomed to Lee Center (C4H), Chestnut Street (S72B) and the Beeches (S73B) and back. Expect lots of traffic today. The groomers will be going out again tonight. The guys are doing an outstanding job!

Friday, January 25th. Last night the groomer went from the groomer barn south to Camroden (C7D) (to Penn Mtn connection) and back. Tonight the whole system gets groomed. Enjoy!

Thursday, January 24. Last night the north trail (C7 & C4A) was groomed to West Leyden and back to West Branch. This morning the trail to Point Rock (C41) will be groomed and back to the groomer barn. The south trail (C7D) was groomed to Lee Center (C4H), Chestnut Street (S72B) and the Beeches (S73B) and back. The snow is thin on the south end of the system. Overall, conditions are good.

Wednesday, January 23. Last night the trail to Camroden (C7D) (to Penn Mtn connection) and the Delta Lake State Park (C7P) was groomed. Conditions are reported as pretty good.

Tuesday, January 22. Last night the north trail (C7 & C4A) was groomed to West Leyden and Point Rock (C41) and back to the groomer barn. The south trail (C7D) was groomed to Lee Center (C4H), Chestnut Street (S72B) and the Beeches (S73B) and back, and tonight the trail to Camroden (C7D) to Penn Mtn connection and the Delta Lake State Park (C7P) will be groomed. Watch out for a large unfrozen waterhole behind the Beeches on S73B.

Monday, January 21st. Both groomers will be heading out tonight to groom and fill waterholes. We're starting from scratch and we really did not get much snow (8" of fluff at Hawkins Corners and I heard about the same in Ava), so conditions may not be the greatest, even after the groomers have been out. What we need is more snow!

Tuesday, January 8th. It is 64 degrees at the Oneida County Airport at noon. The south trails are toast. Let's hope the north trails survive this January thaw.

Sunday, January 6th. The south trail (C7D) was groomed from the groomer barn to Lee Center (C4H), Chestnut Street (S72B) and the Beeches (S73B) and back. The north trail (C7 & C4A) was groomed to West Leyden and back to the groomer barn.

Friday, January 4th.  Last night the south trail from the Groomer Barn to Camroden (C7D) to Penn Mtn connection and the Delta Lake State Park (C7P) was groomed.

Thursday, January 3rd. Last night the north trail (C7 & C4A) was groomed to West Leyden and back to West Branch. This morning the groomer will head to Point Rock (C41) and back to the groomer barn. Trails are flat and fast - watch out for ice. The south end of the system has marginal snow cover. Get out and enjoy it while you can. Next weeks warm-up will keep the groomers parked.

Sunday, December 30th.  Neil Sestito, Nick Desitio, Sarah, Darwin, and David Piersall worked on the trails today trying to dry up some of the major water holes. We still have some more to try and fix but with that is time and maybe some snow tonight. Remember every three hundred feet of elevation is two degrees colder and West Branch is 5 degrees colder than Stokes that means freezing temps when its melting in Stokes. The trails north of Stokes are passable but still littered with wet spots. South of Stokes is just not enough snow. Sorry for the dismal report but that's mother nature. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and has a happy New Year.

Sunday, December 23rd. The north end of the trail system was groomed last night to West Leyden and Point Rock. John Beggs and Doug Finster spent some extra time filling waterholes and reported that the trails were in good shape. Let's hope the rain doesn't wreck the base.

Friday, December 21st. The south end of the trail system was groomed last night, including C4H to Lee Center, C7D to Western, S73B to the Beeches and S72B to Rome. The State Park spur (C7P) did not get groomed due to time constraints. Also, please stay on the trail across the street from the Coffeehouse on C4A between Route 26 and the Point Rock/Ava intersection (OD22C). The landowner has called and has stated that riders are going off the trail and riding in the direction of some freshly planted trees. The club will be staking this area with ribbon. In the meantime - STAY ON THE TRAIL!

Wednesday, December 19th. The groomer will be going to Point Rock tonight. Tomorrow both groomers will be going out to groom the south end of the system to include Lee Center, Western and North Rome (Beeches and Chestnut Street). There are numerous trees hanging over the trails everywhere which is slowing down our progress. They must be cleared before we can bring the groomer through. A new windshield for the Piston Bully is $2,200 and we would rather use that money to buy 600 gallons of diesel fuel!

Tuesday, December 18th.  Dave Piersall and Neil Sestito groomed north from the groomer barn to West Leyden (C7 & C4A) and back last night. They left at 5:30 pm and returned at 4:00 am. The trip took twice as long due to the large number of iced over trees with hanging branches.  A lot of tree trimming was done along the way. The water holes have been filled in and for the most part should be frozen up.

Please Note:  Please be aware of trail changes and stay on the trails.  We are so grateful to our landowners who give us permission to have a trail on their land so please RESPECT them.  You are also reminded to yield the right of way to a groomer.  When meeting a groomer in tight places, move off the trail as far as possible and stay there until the groomer and drag passes by you to avoid sliding down into the equipment.  The groomer cannot move off the trail nor back up. When following a groomer, stay back 100 feet until you can safely pass or are given the signal by the operator to pass.   Always dim your headlights when meeting or following a groomer as the high beams blind the driver.
